Thermal-Magnetic Circuit Breakers:

Thermal Protection Function: (Provides protection under overload conditions)
The thermal protection mechanism incorporates a bimetal element, which is a combination of two metals with distinct thermal expansion coefficients. When heated, this bimetal bends towards the metal with the lesser expansion, triggering a notch that releases the breaker's mechanism to interrupt the circuit. The bending rate of the bimetal correlates directly with the current passing through the breaker-as current increases, so does the heat, thereby activating overcurrent protection for currents exceeding the breaker's rated capacity.
Magnetic Protection Function:(Provides protection under short circuit conditions) Another critical function of the breaker is tosafeguard the connected circuit against shortcircuits. Short circuits may result fromcontacts between phases or phase-groundconnections. During such events, amassive current surge flows through the cables, necessitating an immediate disconnection of thesystem to prevent thermal damage. The breakermust perform an instantaneous opening toprotect the connected load. This function is carriedout by a mechanical openingmechanism thattriggers throughmagnetization, induced by the magnetic field generated by the short circuit current.This ensures swift and effective protection, maintaining the integrity and safety of the entire electrical system.
